Shenzhen in southern China, near the border with Hong Kong, was named China’s first Special Economic Zone more than 25 years ago. At the time, it was a sleepy farming village that few could have guessed would mushroom into the dynamic, international, commercial center it is today. The city has grown so much, in fact, it has been split into three distinct districts: two commercial ones, Lo Wu and Futian and one almost exclusively residential, Nanshan.

Over the years, Shenzhen has attracted numerous foreign professionals who saw it as a way to live – and learn – in China with their families while still being close to Hong Kong’s vast social resources and sophistication. To this day, the Chinese government continues to support numerous infrastructure projects in Shenzhen believing the city will become a vibrant international center.

Residential Neighborhoods in Shenzhen

Shekou – Conveniently located about 25 minutes from Shenzhen proper and only an hour by ferry from Hong Kong and Macau, this neighborhood offers myriad, quality international services ranging from schools to supermarkets to trendy restaurants and bars. The various luxury residential buildings offer a selection of high-rise or villa-style living, each, typically, with stunning sea views, tennis courts and full recreational facilities.

Portofino  – Often compared to the exclusive, relatively remote Discovery Bay district of Hong Kong, the Portofino neighborhood offers a lakeside promenade and a slew of sophisticated cafes, bars and restaurants. Since 2001, its main housing draw has been the eponymous Portofino, an exclusive Italian-style, multi-use complex with broad, tree-lined boulevards that are friendly to both bicycles and pedestrians.

Commercial Districts in Shenzhen

Lo Wu – This was Shenzhen’s first commercial area, close to the Hong Kong border-crossing of the same name and popular with both international manufacturers and day-tourists. The buildings here, mostly older high-rises, are now classified as Grade B but some Grade A buildings, such as King Glory and Seibu will soon come on line.

Futian – Shenzhen’s newest business district, located to the west of Lo Wu, is close to the second border crossing with Hong Kong at Huanggang and features two recently completed Grade A commercial buildings: CITIC Plaza and The Landmark. The area is close to the subway, good business hotels such as The Marco Polo and the Sheraton and a broad selection of good, international restaurants.

Nan Shan – This is the latest commercial district to rise from the reclaimed rice paddies of Shenzhen but, so far, it’s been home mostly to warehouses and I-T infrastructure buildings, few of which are Grade A. It is, however, close to Shekou, the finest residential neighborhood for foreign residents. For more information, please see Residential Neighborhoods in Shenzhen.
